Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship
House of Commons
Dear Mr. McCallum,
We want more refugees! We call on the Government to recognize the ongoing critical nature of the prospects of Syrian refugees, and the desire of Canadians to be leaders in helping them without compromising the needs of refugees from other countries.
As evidenced by the large number of private sponsorship groups being formed across Canada, Canadians want to bring as many refugees as possible to Canada, and to assist them in settling here.
We are calling on the Government to restore the previously augmented staffing levels in Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan and Winnipeg in order to continue to process Syrian refugees at maximum speed. This will involve hiring new staff so that other international posts are not compromised.
Furthermore, all sponsorship groups which have submitted applications by the end of May 2016 should be allotted a family, and the Government should undertake that the family will arrive within 3 months, that is, no later than the end of August.
We need to continue to improve in the area of processing refugee claims and providing settlement assistance in Canada; to strive to be moral and humanitarian world leaders.
